9/11: Where Were You?

The 9/11 attacks

(UAL flt 175 prior to impacting The World Trade Center)

It has been nine long, and sometimes painful, years since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and the UAL crash in Pennsylvania.  On that day I lost one friend, Captain Jason Dahl the captain on UAL flight 93, the airplane that crashed in PA.

Saturday marks the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States. For those of us in the airline industry, and specifically at United and American Airlines, the date is particularly poignant. It is a painful tribute for all who lost friends, colleagues, and passengers. Everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing on that sunny September morning when we first became aware of what had happened. This Saturday, there will be numerous memorial services and events and, hopefully, you can take part in one of them.

Where were you on the morning of September 11, 2001, the day that the world changed forever?

Please never forget these honorable people and their ultimate sacrifice!  One must remember that the price of freedom sometimes can be the ultimate sacrifice!

  1. Thanks for remembering Leon, like you Captain Jasen Dahl was a good friend, he gave me my 737 type rating. And just a couple of weeks before 9/11 he rode my jump seat from SFO to JFK commuting to work. I especially remember his passion for aircraft safety, and some of his ideas on how to improve safety.

I just hope America never forgets, I know I will not forget.

Just for the record I was supposed to take a flight that morning from DEN to SJC, but obviously we never got off the ground.

  3. Dave,
    Thanks for your comments.

I was at the DEN employee parking lot heading into the airport when all this came down. I was trying to go to Fresno,CA for my youngest son’s wedding that was occurring on Sept. 15th. I ended up driving to Fresno.

From our EAL experience in NYC, this event was even more profound for me! But the fact that I knew several people on UAL flight 93, and upon checking my log book found out that I had flown each of those flights during the summer of 2001! So more than likely, some of those terrorists could have been on my summertime flights as a dry run!

Like you,I worked with Jason in the UAL training center. Later, he administered my B-737 type rating check when I checked out as Captain. He was a very good man!
